A Warm Bath Ritual for Better Sleep

There are weeks when my mind won't slow down. I lie in bed going over conversations and to-do lists, and sleep feels far away. On those nights, I've learned not to fight it in bed. I get up early in the evening and run a bath.
A warm bath ritual for better sleep has become one of my favorite tools for hard weeks. Many people find that a warm bath an hour or two before bed helps them feel sleepy, and the quiet time helps calm a busy mind. Here's how I make it a ritual, not just a bath.
When to Take Your Bath
Timing matters. Aim to finish your bath about one to two hours before you want to be asleep.
Many people find that warming up and then cooling down afterward helps them feel ready for sleep. If you bathe right before bed, you may still feel too warm to settle down.
If 9:30 is lights-out, start running the water around 8:00. Put a reminder on your phone the first few times until the timing becomes natural.
Set the Scene
Turn your bathroom into a calm space for 30 minutes.
- Dim the lights. Use a soft lamp or a flameless candle instead of bright overhead lights.
- Put your phone away, or on silent across the room.
- Play something soothing: soft instrumental music, worship songs, or nothing at all.
- Lay out what you'll need: towel, moisturizer, pajamas, and a glass of water.
- Make the room warm so you're not cold when you step out.
Get the Water Right
Warm, not hot. Very hot water can leave mature skin dry and itchy, and it can make you feel lightheaded.
- The water should feel comfortably warm on your wrist.
- Soak for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Keep a glass of water nearby. Warm baths can make you thirsty.
If you have heart problems, low blood pressure, diabetes, or are pregnant, check with your doctor before taking long, warm baths.
What to Add to Your Bath
Keep it simple. You don't need anything, but these can make it feel special:
- Epsom salt. Many people enjoy it in a relaxing soak.
- A few drops of oil. A plant oil can leave skin feeling soft. Be careful, because oil makes the tub slippery.
- Calming scents. Lavender is a favorite for evenings. If you use essential oils, dilute them in a carrier oil first and never add them straight to the water.
Use the Time Well
This is your time to slow down.
- Breathe slowly: in for four counts, out for six.
- Pray, or quietly name what you're grateful for today.
- Read a few pages of something light.
- Let your thoughts come and go without chasing them.
- Notice the warmth in your shoulders, back, and feet.
Finish With Skin Care
How you end your bath matters as much as the bath itself.
- Rinse off with a quick, lukewarm shower if you used bath salts.
- Pat yourself mostly dry, leaving your skin a little damp.
- Moisturize right away while your skin is still damp, with extra on elbows, knees, and heels.
- Put on soft pajamas and socks.
- Go straight to your bedroom. No more screens.
Make Your Bath Ritual for Better Sleep a Habit
You don't need a bath every night. Two or three times a week, on your busiest or most stressful days, is plenty. On other nights, a warm shower and the same calm finish give you many of the same benefits.
If you struggle with sleep most nights for weeks at a time, please talk with your doctor. Ongoing sleep problems deserve real attention.
How I Use It
I wash with my Black Soap Face & Body Wash near the end of my soak, working a small scoop into a soft lather between my hands. Then I step out, pat dry, and smooth my Whipped Shea Butter Body Cream over my still-damp skin.
The warm water, the earthy lather, and the rich cream feel like a signal to my whole body that the day is over. On bath nights, I fall asleep faster and wake up with softer skin.
Other Products I Recommend
- For a relaxing soak: Dr Teal's Lavender Epsom Salt Soak.
- For comfort: a cushioned bath pillow to support your neck while you soak.
I lay down the day's worries and receive the gift of rest.
