Success Self Care Black Soap Foaming Facial Wash with soft foam on the silicone brush head

The week I turned 50, I stood in my bathroom and counted the bottles. Fourteen. Serums I'd bought on a friend's recommendation, a toner I didn't remember buying, two eye creams. And my skin still felt tight and dry by lunchtime.

That was the moment I decided my skin wanted less fuss, not more products. If you've been looking for a skincare routine for women over 50 that's simple, natural, and affordable, this is the one I actually use, morning and night. Five steps. About ten minutes total.

1. Cleanse gently, once or twice a day

Skin after 50 tends to make less oil, so harsh cleansers that leave you "squeaky clean" can leave you feeling dry and tight instead.

  • Use lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water strips moisture.
  • Massage your cleanser in for 30 to 60 seconds, then rinse well.
  • Pat dry with a soft towel. Don't rub.
  • If your skin feels dry in the morning, a splash of water is enough. Save the full cleanse for the evening, when you're washing away the day.

2. Moisturize while your skin is still damp

This is the step that changed my skin the most. Moisturizer works best on slightly damp skin because it helps hold that water in.

Within a minute of cleansing, while your face is still a little damp, smooth on a hydrating serum, then your moisturizer. If you like a serum, a simple hyaluronic acid formula is an affordable place to start, such as The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5.

Don't forget your neck and the backs of your hands. They show dryness just as much as your face does.

3. Wear sunscreen every single morning

If you only add one new habit, make it this one. Daily sunscreen helps protect your skin from sun damage, and that matters at every age.

  • Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.
  • Apply it as the last step of your morning routine, even on cloudy days and even if you're mostly indoors near windows.
  • Use about a nickel-sized amount for your face, and cover your neck too.

I like a lightweight sunscreen that doesn't leave a white cast and sits well under makeup. EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 is a favorite with a lot of women my age.

4. Give your body the same care as your face

Somewhere along the way, many of us stopped caring for the skin below our chins. Elbows, knees, heels, and shins often get the driest after 50.

After your shower, while your skin is still damp, smooth a rich body cream over your arms, legs, and anywhere that feels rough. Heels love a thick layer at night with cotton socks on top. It takes two minutes and your skin feels softer by morning.

5. End the day with a calm evening ritual

Good skin habits and good rest go together. A routine you look forward to is one you'll actually keep.

  • Wash your face before you get tired. I cleanse right after dinner so I never skip it.
  • Dim the lights and put your phone away 30 minutes before bed.
  • Keep a glass of water on your nightstand.
  • Take three slow breaths and name one thing you're grateful for.

If you notice skin changes that worry you, like a new or changing spot, ongoing irritation, or a rash, please check with your doctor or a dermatologist.

How I Use It

Step 1 in my routine is my Black Soap Foaming Facial Wash. I make it in small batches with the same natural black soap blend as my face and body wash, in a foaming pump with a soft silicone brush head.

Every evening I pump two pushes of foam onto the brush, massage it over damp skin in small circles for about 30 seconds, and rinse with lukewarm water. It cleanses gently and leaves my face feeling fresh and comfortable, not tight. Then I go straight to step 2 while my skin is still damp.

For step 4, I use my Whipped Shea Butter Body Cream on my elbows, knees, and heels. It's 100% shea butter, whipped soft, and it melts right in.

Other Products I Recommend

These fill in the gaps in my handmade line:

  • Sunscreen: EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46, lightweight and easy to wear every day.
  • Hydrating serum: The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, a budget-friendly first serum for dry, mature skin.

My skin has carried me through fifty years. It deserves gentle, faithful care.
